Pre-Health Course Requirements

Pre-health courses needed for health profession school admittance.

Course Requirements
Students who are preparing for entrance into professional schools offering degrees in medicine, dentistry, podiatry, optometry, chiropractic and veterinary medicine or the physician’s assistant diploma should check with their advisers regarding specific courses and requirements.

Medicine M.D./D.O.
All science courses listed below are one-year sequences with labs.

  • General Biology 111 and 112
  • General Chemistry 111 and 112
  • Organic Chemistry 251, 252, 253, 254
  • Physics 111 and 112 OR Physics 113 and 114
  • Depending on where you apply, some schools may have other requirements such as English, math (i.e. calculus) and/or upper-level biology courses.  Check prerequisites carefully. 
  • Due to changes in the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test)  beginning in 2015 students must additionally a take courses Biochemistry, Psychology, Sociology and Statistics in order to score successfully on this critical exam.

Dentistry
Minimum three years undergraduate, B.A. or B.S. preferred.
All science courses listed below are one-year sequences with labs.

  • General Biology 111 and 112
  • General Chemistry 111 and 112
  • Organic Chemistry 251, 252, 253, 254
  • Physics 111 and 112 OR Physics 113 and 114
  • Depending on where you apply, some schools may have other requirements such as English, math (i.e. calculus) and upper-level biology courses. It is highly recommended to take advanced courses such as anatomy, histology, physiology and biochemistry.  Check prerequisites carefully. 

Podiatry
All science courses listed below are one-year sequences with labs.

  • General Biology 111 and 112
  • General Chemistry 111 and 112
  • Organic Chemistry 251, 252, 253, 254
  • Physics 111 and 112 OR Physics 113 and 114
  • Depending on where you apply, some schools have other requirements such as English, math (i.e. calculus) and upper-level biology courses.  Check prerequisites carefully. 

Optometry
Minimum three years; B.A. or B.S. preferred. All science courses listed below are one-year sequences with labs.

General Biology 111 and 112

  • General Chemistry 111and 112
  • Organic Chemistry (251, 252, 253, 254)
  • Physics 111 and 112 OR Physics 113 and 114
  • Depending on where you apply, some schools may have other requirements such as English, math (i.e. calculus or statistics) or psychology.  Specific additional requirements as recommended by individual schools.  Check prerequisites carefully.

Chiropractic
All science courses listed below are one-year sequences with labs.

  • General Chemistry 111and 112
  • Organic Chemistry 251, 252, 253, 254
  • General Biology 111 and 112
  • Physics 111 and 112 OR Physics 113 and 114
  • Depending on where you apply, some schools may have other requirements such as English, math (i.e. calculus or statistics) or psychology.  Check prerequisites carefully.

Veterinary Medicine
All science courses listed below are one-year sequences with labs.

  • General Biology 111 and 112
  • General Chemistry 111 and 112
  • Organic Chemistry 251, 252, 253, 254
    Physics 111 and 112 OR Physics 113 and 114

Some schools have very specific requirements often including Microbiology, Statistics, Biochemistry, Animal Science, Nutrition, and/or English. Check prerequisites carefully.  

Physician Assistant
Varies with each school but may include two semesters each:

  • General Biology 111 and 112
  • General Chemistry 111 and 112
  • Depending on where you apply, some schools have specific requirements including organic chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, anatomy, physiology, math (e.g., statistics), and psychology. Check prerequisites carefully.

Some schools have very specific requirements often including organic chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, anatomy, physiology, one semester of math (i.e. statistics),  and/or psychology.  Check prerequisites carefully.
